Francesco Pico - Absolutely Flabbergasted.
Top Dutch producer Francesco Pico is back and ready to knock your socks off. Absolutely Flabbergasted is out from today on Manual Music. Every bit as surprising and exciting as the title suggests, this is an excellent chance to experience a true student of musical narrative at the top of his game.
The release is Francesco Pico's third full-length album, following 2007's Imagining Sounds (Extrema Music) and 2009's Imagining Sounds 2 (Outside The Box Music). Absolutely Flabbergasted takes Pico into previously unexplored territory, and it feels as though he has broadened his list of musical influences considerably.
To be flabbergasted means to be left speechless. It's certainly the case that you'll be far too busy enjoying the music to want to utter a word. A casual listen reveals a deftly executed progressive mix, yet there's so much more at play beneath the surface. Especially nice is the introspective exhale of Absolute Breakdown and the subsequent segue into title track Absolutely Flabbergasted, which teems with densely layered polyrhythms.
It's hard to identify favourite tracks when part of what makes the album so outstanding is their relationships with one another, which feel as natural as breathing in and out. Pico's collaboration with Royal Sapien, another genre-buster, on You Changed My Way has clearly paid dividends though, as has a willingness to explore some more playful beats on Orphan Up Your Guard.
Absolutely Flabbergasted is Francesco Pico's first album release on Manual Music, following on with a single release The Confusion Grows last year and several remixes.
He has also released and remixed tracks for labels including Global Underground, AudioTherapy, Urbantorque, Extrema, Outside The Box, Proton and his own label Magnitude Recordings. Tracks are supported by multiple big-name DJs such as Sasha, Nick Warren, Hernan Cattaneo, Jimmy v M and Laurent Garnier. Pico also presents a slew of radio shows including spots on Proton Radio and 3FM.

Mixed by Max Graham - Cycles vol. 3.
Max Graham further builds his ‘Cycles’ brand, with round 3 of the outstanding ‘Cycles’ compilation series. Balancing the peaks of this year’s music with the highlights of the future, the Canadian producer/DJ tells another story of energy and emotion with a seamlessly flowing mix. Get ready to be moved with a new round of quality tunes.
Lots has happened since Graham landed the first volume of the series in 2008. ‘Cycles 1’ unlocked the path to Graham’s first artist album, ‘Radio’, released in June 2010. The album included hits like ‘Sun In The Winter’, ‘DUSKY 2010’ and ‘Nothing Else Matters’, blazing a trail to the first episode of Max’ very own weekly radio show, ‘Cycles Radio ’. In 2011, Max’ very own Re*Brand label didn’t only release his successful singles ‘So Caught Up’ and ‘F.Y.C.’, but also offered a home label to upcoming talents like Protoculture, D-Mad and many other promising producers.
On ‘Cycles 3’ Max Graham shows EDM land why, 15 years after he first touched the decks, he still hasn’t lost the feel of dance music. With a sound that sways between trance and progressive, he introduces the listeners of ‘Cycles 3’ to the tracks of Heatbeat, Protoculture, Andrew Bayer, Ørjan Nilsen, Soundprank, D-Mad, DNS Project and more. More than just beats and sounds coming together, ‘Cycles 3’ tells you a story untold.

Featuring Defected Handlebar Hustlers and Other Headline DJs + the Movember Grooming Team
On the door donation minimum £5: 10% of the nights bar revenue will be donated to Movember.
Mo Bros and Mo Sistas listen up, the month formerly known as November has been suitably rebranded Movember around the world so people anywhere can participate in the sprouting and grooming of moustaches in order to raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancers which affect men. Maybe you are already proudly sporting a ‘tache and getting your groom on, or maybe you’re one of those shouting ‘Movember’ at those running the gauntlet of the daily commute? Either way it’s all good fun for an exceptional cause.
The Defected Handlebar Hustlers fundraising effort began grooming on 1st November and the response has already been phenomenal with the team members perfecting a variety of looks from the debonair to the death row!
Now, together with our artist and record label chums, we are releasing Mo’Grooves… a digital compilation of unmixed tracks donated by some of the world’s best DJs and producers, retailed around the world, where all proceeds will go towards our goal of raising a shed load of cash for this worthy cause.
The album will include 13 specially selected tracks, some previously unreleased, from a plethora of dance acts and labels including Defected, Toolroom and Hospital Records as well as individual tracks from 2000 And One, Xpress 2, Ray Foxx, Copyright, Funkagenda, Faze Action, the Shapeshifters and Danism.
Always keen to get involved in activities that involve jest and frivolity that ultimately contribute to a warm sense of wellbeing, we decided to bring you Get Your Groom On... Taking place on Wednesday 30 November at the famous Horse & Groom in Curtain Road, London, EC2, it’s a special one-off charity event for disco dancers and music lovers where all donations at the door and 10% of the total bar revenue will be donated to Movember and, should you require it, the Movember Grooming Team will be on hand to give your hard earned stubble a little professional attention, and who knows, some of our star performers may even brave the barber’s chair to lose their hirsuteness altogether.
For those of you who have the urge to give generously, please visit the Defected Handlebar Hustler Movember page that features a special crack team of moustachioed dance music fund raisers, including Simon Dunmore (Defected label Head), Copyright, Duane Harden, Franky Rizardo, James Talk and Ridney.

Presented and Mised by Tom Flynn - Strictly Rhythms vol. 8.
Birmingham’s very own Tom Flynn comes to us with a fistful of credentials – not only has he graced the likes of labels like Dirtybird, Size and Deadfish with his productions, Pete Tong gave him Best Break Through Producer of 2010 and named his track Bianca as Essential New Tune. Let loose on Strictly’s vast and varied collection of tracks, Flynn follows previous Strictly Rhythms selectors Michel Cleis, Charles Webster and Radio Slaves in fine style, choosing a session of lesser-known gems and underground goodies augmented by a clutch of his own edits plus a brand new Tom Flynn production in Opera House. Armand Van Helden’s Nrongo Ra Mrongo, Danny Tenaglia’s awesome Equinox by Code 718 and the Lil Louis and Louie Vega collaboration, Freaky by Lou2 are resplendent in their original forms, while among the re-edits are Muevete Mama by Afro Cube (aka Murk’s Oscar G), Sir James’ Special, Hardrive’s Sindae, The Believers’ Who Dares To Believe In Me? and South St Player’s Who Keeps Changing Your Mind? Tom’s mix is a consummate addition to the series.
"When I first got into house music, I spent most of my teenage years in record shops hunting for the best house music I could find. After hearing numerous Strictly Rhythm records on people like Danny Rampling’s LGDP show, it was clear that was where the quality was.
I can honestly say the first label I would look for as soon as I went in a record store was Strictly Rhythm. I thought I had a lot of Strictly records, and knew a lot about the label, until I came to do this mix and was granted access to the entire back catalogue - WOW!
There are records here that were made 15 years ago that don't sound out of place in today’s sets. I could quite easily have done 8 different compilations given the amount of quality I had to choose from, but I wanted to do a mix that reflected what I looked for in music back then, and even now to this day.
You won't hear the obvious big records on here, Ultra Nate, Lil Mo Ying Yang etc, I wanted it to be more about the deeper, underground quality that this label has provided since its creation back in 1989.
I hope you enjoy the mix and have as much fun listening and dancing to it as I did making it! See you on the dancefloor!” – Tom Flynn

Mixed by Ali Wilson - High Contrast presents.
Featuring music from across the electronic dance range, including 31 tracks and remixes from W&W And Mark Sixma, Marco V, Orjan Nilsen, Jochen Miller, Marcel Woods, Alex M.O.R.P.H. and many more.
As this dance music year starts to draw to a close, High Contrast Recordings are ready to put 2011 through the sound barrier with their latest compilation expedition. The man tasked with compiling and mixing it is none other than genre-explorer extraordinaire, Ali Wilson.
Late last year, through the release of his 'Phenomenon' album, Ali established himself as one of the producers to watch throughout 2011. By the same stroke it sent his deck career into overdrive, with turntable duty being served at a many major worldwide events and festivals.
Now he's been given the keys to a trove of the best current and forthcoming crop from High Contrast Recordings and beyond and he's ready to deal the year some compilation justice!
Wilson instantly draws the listener in on Mix 1 with the Dyor Feat. Matthew Hall's groovy-but-moody 'On The Road' and 'I Die', the moving, Sue McLaren-sung current single from Dennis Sheperd & Alan Morris. The album's audio initially charts a chunky, proggy path, but don't get too settled. Tectonic style shifts are afoot. True to his reputation, Ali refuses to hang in any genre locale long enough for the album to get pigeonholed. Erick Strong's 'Muffin' puts it into a housey S.H.M. stride, before Aerofoil & E&G's 'Plank Effect' and Marco V & Damian William's 'Essence' re-point it down a churning, burning tech road.
Given that this is the man who gave us 'Pandora' - one of dance overlord Armin van Buuren's top 10 tracks of 2010 - you better believe that some big room action isn't far off. Norwegian sensation Orjan Nilsen sends the mercury rising with the pulsating 'Atchoo', while 'Twist' (in its arena-sized Rick Mitchells and Bas van Essen Remix form) catalyses with its attacking can't-miss riff.
The second mix comes to life from the first beat of Protoculture's formidable, 'Liquid Logic', with the South African's latest stirring the prog-trance waters deep. Hot on its heels is 'Flashback' - Jochen Miller's new single - which builds looping, whooping vocals and knowingly retrospective synths and riffs into the game. These overture a big trance 1-2-3, with Ali slickly dropping 'Lifetime' - Ben Nicky's huge pads-&-chords melodic moment, Snatt & Vix's cheekily-titled 'Loco Motion' and Ben Gold's likewise highly descriptive 'Colossal' one on top of the other. With the release right at boiling point, taking his foot off the pedal is not an option. The dynamic orchestral majesty of Ralphie B's 'Epic Battle', the heavy drumatics of 'Viking' (Orjan Nilsen again) and the tech rhythms, evocative chants and wildly climactic synths of Ali's own 'Elpis' Calling' combine to create a suitable meteoric conclusion.
High Contrast Recordings Presents Ali Wilson is a 31-track mix comp, purposefully and skillfully mixed to chip away at dance music's stylistic borders. Lovers of Cox, Jules, Van Buuren, Prydz and a dozen other eclectic DJs will find plenty of audio to enjoy. Listen without prejudice.
